Pigeons...
Look at all these pigeons I spotted in Barmouth yesterday. All on the railway bridge.
We hadn't parked for long enough for me to sketch them there and then, and so today I drew four from the photographs I took instead.
I started with black ink - mixing it with water for the initial layer. Later adding colour pencils, white dry pastel, silver ink and charcoal pencil as well as black and grey brush pens.

A day at the beach
Last week I had a day at the beach with my cousin. Despite heavy drizzle when we left Herefordshire we had a dry day at the coast, with a bit of sunshine for an added bonus!
We picnicked at Borth beach - and I sketched

A Creative Adventure with The Walking Sketchbook
So far this year I have done quite a lot of very neat, considered work. Yesterday I went on a creative adventure with my friend Katherine Owen (aka The Walking Sketchbook) and it was the perfect way to mix up my creativity. We had the date in the diary for weeks and I was really looking forward to getting outside and sketching somewhere on location. -
Sketching in the rain
Last Saturday, my friend Kath and I went on a wet weather sketching adventure.
It was so wet that we wore full waterproofs and both were armed with a large umbrella each.
I found a couple of different positions to draw from, this one (below) being the first. A forked branch above me made the perfect place to hang my umbrella and I was able to sit underneath it in the dry. I had a seating mat with me as I didn't trust how waterproof my trousers were, plus it provides a bit of comfort.

Vitamin Sea…
Last week I went to the sea for three days with my good friend. We had a lovely relaxing and creative time. It was really lovely to draw these on location, soaking up the sea air and nattering away as I drew. -
Dandelions
Dandelions have really caught my eye this year. I have found I have drawn them a lot recently. Here are some that I drew using procreate on the iPad (something I'm still getting used to). From here, and something I was reading about Courage, this character appeared! Dandy, the Lion. -
Sketching in a field
The other day I went for a walk from the studio. I popped my A6 sketchbook, pen and watercolours in the pocket of my dungarees (-the fact that these fit in here is an exciting new discovery!) and took some tea too. There is something wonderful about working outdoors. I often fool myself into thinking that I need more kit or more time than I do - my favourite results are often created using a small piece of paper and just a pen and drawn quickly - no fretting or over stressing the situation. -
How I draw... a dandelion
Drawing is so instinctive for me now that I just do it.
However, when someone else watches me draw and comments on the process of how a drawing is created it makes me almost zoom out and think about how I’m constructing the picture and what I’m looking at and when.
So this week I’ve tried something new. I sat down to do my daily drawing but this time, I filmed it in real time and talked as I drew, in an attempt to explain what I’m doing and where I’m looking as I go.

The power of personal projects
I am a big believer in personal projects. Alice Draws the Line came about because of one of them. My new year's resolution for 2008 was to do a drawing a day for the whole year. I kept the daily drawings all in one sketchbook and by the summer it spilled into a second volume. It wasn't easy, it was a challenge. -
My Drawing A Day kit... and sketchbooks galore!
I've occasionally been asked on Instagram about my sketchbooks and the materials I use to create my artwork.
So here we go, some answers...
